The Happiest Happy Hours in Galveston
Saint Patrick’s Day is upon us! And whether you celebrate the Patron Saint of Ireland on March 17 or not, this festive holiday is always a good excuse to imbibe in some tasty libations. Since we’ve been sharing some of our favorite local restaurants — like where to grab a great breakfast or a juicy cheeseburger — we figured the Feast of Saint Patrick would be a good time to tell you about all of our favorite places to enjoy a happy hour drink (or two!) around Galveston.
Although the origin of the happy hour tradition is unknown, some believe that it was a phrase coined by the US Navy to alleviate boredom during the long days at sea. Typically, happy hour takes place at local bars between 4 PM and 7 PM and includes discounts on drinks and sometimes small plate hors d’oeuvres, too.
Come take a stroll with us to some of our favorite happy hour watering holes on the Texas Gulf Coast.
Yaga’s Cafe
With loads of online reviews promising that this place has “the best happy hour in Galveston” you’ll for sure want to check out Yaga’s Cafe. Located in the heart of the historic Galveston Strand district, Yaga’s has live entertainment and dancing on the weekends, too.
The happy hour specials include $10 pitchers of margaritas and $1 off all draft beers. Plus, they serve some mouthwatering $5 happy hour nibbles like Caribbean Pork Nachos, Chicken Quesadillas, and Boneless Chicken Wings. Yum.
Hearsay on The Strand
Hearsay is particularly proud of its “chic antique” atmosphere. No doubt about it, the retro vibe at Hearsay is memorable. But perhaps even more memorable is the food. Hearsay has a lot of “this is the best meal I’ve ever had” comments in their online reviews. That alone makes it worth the trip.
Every weekday from 4 PM to 7 PM they have an epic happy hour — er, Hearsay Hour — menu that is truly impressive. With $5 bites like Ahi Tuna Flatbread, Kung Pao Shrimp, Cheesesteak Eggrolls, and Deviled Eggs, you could make a whole meal out of these light bites. Pair them with a $6 cocktail like the Whitney (raspberry vodka, cassis, sparkling wine, muddles blackberries, lemon juice, and sugar) or a $5 draft beer and you’ve got one of the best happy hours on the Strand.
The Spot
Just as the name implies, The Spot is the place to hang out with friends and relax. You can stake out your spot on one of their multi-level, open-air patios with ocean views or hang out inside and catch the game on one of many HDTVs.
In the Tiki Bar, happy hour starts at 4 PM daily. Their large selection of draft beers is served at a frosty 29 degrees. Try one of their famous frozen drinks like the Dirty Monkey (a Pina Colada blended with Banana Rum). Or sip on a classic Mai Tai, Hurricane, or Margarita. They also have fun “tiki” shots like Lemon Drop and Cinnamon Toast. And their food menu includes some legendary burgers and tacos.
Tipsy Turtle Seaside Bar & Grill
Perched right on the sandy shores of the Gulf, the Tipsy Turtle is a beachfront bar and grill with show-stopping views and authentic, oceanside ambiance. Although they don’t currently have a happy hour, they do have a concierge service that will set up chairs and umbrellas on the beach for you in front of the restaurant— how cool is that?
Their specialty cocktails include The Tipsy Mermaid (coconut rum, pineapple juice, and blue curacao), Pineapple Jalapeño Margarita (tequila, triple sec, muddled jalapeños, and pineapple juice), and Jelly Sting (Crown Royal Apple, Fireball whiskey, and cream rum). They also have a ton of ice-cold beers to choose from and serve classic bar food like onion rings, burgers, pizza, and tacos.
Daiquiri Time Out (DTO)
On their website, Daiquiri Time Out explains that their name is inspired by the act of taking a moment to pause and enjoy a drink to unwind. They describe themselves as a “calm within a storm” place to kick back with friends and decompress. Sounds good to us! They offer a large selection of classic, island-style cocktails and specialty curated beers. DTO also boasts a comfortable, neighborhood atmosphere and an exceptional, friendly staff.
The happy hour at DTO lasts all day on Mondays (fitting, right?) and from 4 PM to 7 PM Tuesday through Friday. Their happy hour menu includes $6 cocktails like The Bee’s Knees (Gin, Lemon, and Honey), El Diablo (Tequila, Lime, Cassis, Chili, and Ginger Beer), and an Old Fashioned (Whiskey, Bitters, Brown Sugar). They also offer $1 off draft beers and $2 off glasses of wine.
