At BeachBox, we know that a trip to Texas is often about experiencing a little bit of everything. You have the warm, salty breeze of the Gulf Coast one day and the rich history of the Hill Country the next. Many of our guests love to combine their beach vacation with a visit to one of the most famous cities in the state.
Traveling from Galveston to San Antonio is a popular route for families who want to see the best of Texas. You can start your morning with a sunrise over the Gulf at one of our vacation rentals and end your day strolling the famous River Walk.
Whether you are planning a day trip or moving on to the next leg of your Texas tour, we are here to help you plan the journey. Here is everything you need to know about making the trip from the island to the Alamo City.
The Basics: Distance and Travel Time
Before you pack up the car, it helps to know what to expect. The drive from Galveston to San Antonio is not short, but it is an easy and scenic route through the heart of Texas.
- Distance: Approximately 250 miles
- Drive Time: 4 to 5 hours (depending on Houston traffic)
The trip takes you from the coast, through the bustling city of Houston, and out west toward the edge of the Hill Country. Since you will be passing through Houston, we always recommend planning around rush hour traffic to keep your drive time closer to the 4-hour mark.
Best Ways to Travel
While driving is the most popular choice, there are a few other ways to get between these two cities. Here is a look at your options.
Driving (Recommended)
Driving your own car or a rental is by far the best way to make this trip. It gives you the freedom to leave when you want and make fun stops along the way. The route is very straightforward. You will take I-45 North from Galveston to Houston, and then hop on I-10 West which takes you straight into San Antonio.
💡 Insight: Traffic in Houston can be heavy between 7 AM and 9 AM, and again from 4 PM to 7 PM. Try to time your drive through the city during the middle of the day.
Bus Service
If you prefer not to drive, you can take a bus. Companies like Greyhound and FlixBus operate routes between the two cities. However, keep in mind that there is no direct station in Galveston for many of these lines. You will likely need to take a shuttle or rideshare from Galveston to a bus station in Houston first. This can add a lot of time to your travel day.
Train
We often get asked if there is a train from Galveston to San Antonio. Currently, there is no direct train service. Amtrak’s Sunset Limited line stops in Houston and goes to San Antonio, but it only runs three days a week. Just like the bus, you would need to arrange your own transport from our beach homes to the Amtrak station in Houston.
Fun Stops Along the Way
One of the best parts about driving is the chance to explore. Since the drive takes about four hours, it is perfect for breaking up with a few exciting stops. Here are a few of our favorites.
Space Center Houston
Just a short drive up I-45 from Galveston, this is a must-see for families. It is one of the top attractions in Texas and makes for a perfect first stop on your road trip. You can see real spacecraft, moon rocks, and learn all about NASA’s history. It is fascinating for kids and adults alike.

Buc-ee’s
No Texas road trip is complete without a stop at Buc-ee’s. As you head west on I-10 near Katy or Luling, you will see the signs for the massive beaver logo. These travel centers are legendary for their sparkling clean restrooms and endless snacks. Grab a bag of Beaver Nuggets or a brisket sandwich to fuel the rest of your drive.
💡 Insight: The Buc-ee’s in Luling is one of the largest in the world. It is a great spot to take a funny photo and grab some unique Texas souvenirs.
What to Expect in San Antonio
Once you arrive in San Antonio, the vibe changes from coastal relaxation to vibrant history. It is a city full of culture and color.
- The Alamo: This historic mission is the heart of Texas history. It is smaller than many people expect, but standing in front of it is a powerful experience.
- The River Walk: Located one story below the streets of the city, the River Walk is miles of pathways lined with restaurants, shops, and cypress trees. You can take a boat tour or just walk along the water.
- The Missions: Beyond the Alamo, the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is beautiful to explore on a sunny afternoon.
