Sunny Beach

Park on the Sand and Set Up Right by the Water

Sunny Beach is one of Galveston’s most laid-back stretches of coastline, and it is easy to see why families keep coming back. The entrance is located on 8 Mile Road, and what sets it apart is simple: you can drive right onto the sand and park next to your spot, making the whole day feel effortless from the moment you arrive. Whether you are swimming, sunbathing, or taking a long walk along a wide open shoreline, Sunny Beach delivers the kind of relaxed, low-hassle beach day that is hard to beat.

Visitor Guide

Plan Your Perfect Day At Sunny Beach

📍Location

Sunny Beach is accessed from 8 Mile Road and is listed near 11202 Garfield Way in Galveston. It sits past the more central Seawall area, which is part of why it can feel more tucked away and less hectic.

This is one of the best beaches in Galveston for on-beach parking. You can drive onto the sand and park near your setup, which makes it much easier to manage coolers, chairs, umbrellas, and kids. The sand is often packed, but it is still smart to drive carefully so you do not get stuck. Weekends can get busy, so arriving early is your best bet for claiming a good spot.
  • On beach parking
The biggest convenience is being able to park on the beach next to your setup, which turns the whole day into a low stress, easy in and easy out plan.
  • Pet friendly
Pets are welcome. Keep them leashed and always clean up after them so the beach stays enjoyable for everyone.
  • Public restrooms during season
Restrooms are seasonal, so plan accordingly if you are visiting outside peak months.
  • Trash receptacles nearby
Trash bins are available nearby, making cleanup simple at the end of the day.
  • No showers
There are no showers, so bring extra water to rinse hands, feet, and sandy gear before you head back to the car.

Keep your setup respectful and easy for everyone. Glass is never permitted. Open fires are not permitted. Alcohol is permitted. Pets must stay leashed at all times, and you should always clean up after them. Expect weekends to be the most crowded and occasionally loud.

This is still the Gulf, so conditions can change quickly. Check wind and surf before getting in, stay aware of currents, and keep kids close when the water is active. If the surf looks rough, make it a shoreline splash day and lean into sand games, shade breaks, and relaxing by your setup.

Sunny Beach is busiest on warm weather weekends, so weekday mornings and earlier arrivals are your best bet if you want more space. Breezy shoulder season days can be especially nice for long walks, tossing a frisbee, and a quieter pace.

After your beach time, keep the day going with nearby West End favorites. Grab sunset drinks and live music at Woody’s, go for fresh seafood at Cooper’s Landing, or swing by Seahorse Grill for casual plates like po boys, baskets, and seafood favorites. If you want dinner with a view, Tipsy Turtle is another easy option nearby.

For more than a day trip, BeachBox has vacation homes near Sunny Beach, a cool and comfortable home base for families and pets after a long day in the Gulf Coast sun.

Beautiful beach and the locals we chatted with here were friendly. The water is quite shallow too so the kids can play in it easily the waves are not too bad. It was a beautiful place to watch the sunset!

Free beach, there are no lifeguards at this one. You pull up and park right where you’re going to be, which is nice. People tend to stagger themselves so it’s not too crowded! It’s surprisingly clean!

My family’s preferred beach. I love that it’s not right off the main road so I don’t have to worry about the pup escaping and getting hit by traffic. The beach is normally very clean and it’s not normally crowded. Just watch out for the blue jelly fish they will send your pup and small children to the hospital if stung by one.
