6 Top Spots for Coffee in Galveston

At BeachBox, we consider it our personal responsibility to point you in the right direction. Not only for a place to stay on the Texas Gulf Coast— but where to eat and shop, too. In previous blog posts, we’ve shared with you some of our favorite spots to savor the local seafood, nosh on a juicy burger, sip a happy hour cocktail, and pick up a souvenir or two.

Now, we’re ready to spill the beans— pun intended— on one of our favorite local pastimes. In Galveston, we take our coffee very seriously. You could even call us coffee connoisseurs. And while renting a BeachBox home means you can easily brew your own coffee while still in your pajamas, we encourage you to take a “taste drive” of some of our local brewing grounds.
MOD Coffeehouse
2126 Postoffice Street
It’s fitting that we start our coffee shop tour at MOD Coffeehouse, since they won the 2020 gold medal for Best Coffeeshop in Galveston. Specialty lattes include an Almond Joy, Grasshopper, and Honey Bee. There’s also a latte called the “Just Trust Me” which can be a fun gamble. Then there are the baked goods— like lavender lemon cookies and cinnamon rolls. You’ll also want to try The Dream Bar, which is layers of chocolate chips, coconut, and pecans piled high on a graham cracker crust and drizzled with condensed milk.
You can even stop by MOD for a light lunch. They have an assortment of yummy croissant sandwiches and vegan options to choose from. Stop by their patio on Friday and Saturday evenings for free live music, too.
Red Light Coffee Roasters
2728 Market Street
Located on a sunny street corner in the heart of downtown Galveston, Red Light Coffee Roasters is a local favorite spot for a java fix. The building that houses the roasters is rich in history— it was originally a bordello that became a gambling hall and liquor store in the 1940s.
Menu items include classic drip coffee, vanilla lattes, mocha lattes, cappuccino, flat whites, kombucha, and cold brews. They also have a revolving door of delicious bakery treats including muffins, croissants, and cookies. You’ll want to stop by and try out their patio swings, too.
Sugar Bean Coffee & Cream
11 Evia Main
Tucked into the idyllic neighborhood of Evia on the west end of Galveston, Sugar Bean Coffee & Cream has been serving the Texas Gulf Coast since 2007. Their atmosphere is ideal for a casual get-together with friends or a quiet place to study for students.
Besides delicious coffee, Sugar Bean also serves fresh fruit smoothies like chocolate-peanut butter-banana and blueberry-cherry. They also serve yummy Blue Bell ice cream in waffle cones.
Galveston Coffee Roasters
532 23rd Street
This funky coffee roaster with the bright green and black walls and exposed brick feels like a friendly neighborhood bar. You can sample their Galveston Coffee Roaster flavors and order a single iced coffee to go.
Keep in mind that this is a coffee roaster, so we recommend buying a bag of ground beans to take back to your BeachBox. Their coffee is so good you’re going to want to savor it. We especially enjoy the G-Town House Blend and the Hawaiian Hazelnut.
Shipley Do-Nuts
5401 Broadway Avenue J
Yes, this one is a chain— but hear us out! Shipley Do-Nuts is a doughnut company and coffee shop with over 300 stores throughout the southern US. They pride themselves on their freshly made doughnuts and pastries. The reason we particularly love this Galveston branch of the Shipley chain is their selection of authentic Thai teas and Vietnamese Iced Coffees.
Besides the classic frosted and filled doughnuts, they also have an impressive selection of savory kolaches — a type of sweet pastry that holds a filling. Shipley’s kolaches include sausage and cheese and ham and cheese, which make a meal themselves. Their classic coffee shop menu includes cappuccinos, hot chocolates, drip coffees, and juices.
Je Mocha Bean Coffee and Wine Bar
16708 Termini – San Luis Pass Road Suite F, Jamaica Beach
This cute little coffee shop recently opened in Jamaica Beach and is quickly gaining a stellar reputation with locals and visitors alike. With a gorgeous selection of specialty coffees, teas, danishes, croissants, and muffins, this is a great spot for your local coffee fix.
But Je Mocha doesn’t stop there — they also have a full menu of wines and craft beers. From Pinot Grigio to Riesling to Merlot, these guys have it all plus some yummy IPAs too. And when the temperatures heat up this summer, stop in for a gourmet popsicle or two!
If Je Mocha sounds like your kinda place, rent a BeachBox home in Jamaica Beach (like the Purple Turtle) that will put you within walking distance of Je Mocha Bean Coffee and Wine Bar. The Purple Turtle has sleeping space for 14 people spread out across four bedrooms and a large, fenced-in yard. It’s an easy stroll to the beach, too.
