Planning a trip to the Texas coast is exciting. You are likely dreaming of warm sand, crashing waves, and fresh seafood. But before you can relax on the beach, you need to know how to get here. At BeachBox, we love welcoming families to our island home. We want your journey to be just as smooth as your stay with us.
If you are wondering how to get to Galveston, you have come to the right place. We have helped thousands of guests find their way to our vacation rentals. Whether you are flying in from another state or driving down from Houston, getting here is easier than you might think.
Here is everything you need to know about traveling to Galveston Island.
Flying to the Texas Coast
If you are visiting us from far away, you will likely fly into Houston first. Galveston does not have a large commercial airport for major airlines. However, there are two major airports nearby that make the trip easy.
William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)
This is the most convenient airport for visiting Galveston. It is located on the south side of Houston. This puts you much closer to the island than other options. The drive from Hobby Airport to Galveston is usually about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.
Hobby is a major hub for Southwest Airlines, but other carriers fly here too. It is a smaller airport, which often means shorter lines and easier navigation. Once you land, you can rent a car or catch a shuttle straight to the coast.
George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)
If you are flying internationally or using a specific airline, you might land at Bush Intercontinental. This is a very large airport on the north side of Houston. It offers flights from almost anywhere in the world.
The drive from here to Galveston is longer. It usually takes about an hour and a half. If you hit rush hour traffic in Houston, it can take longer. We suggest renting a car so you can enjoy the drive through the city and down to the water.
Scholes International Airport (GLS)
If you are lucky enough to fly on a private plane, you can land right on the island. Scholes International is located in Galveston. It is right next to attractions like Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn Waterpark. While you cannot book a commercial ticket here, it is a fantastic option for private pilots.
💡 Local tip: Even if you aren’t flying, Scholes is cool to see because it is home to the Lone Star Flight Museum’s air shows during special events.
Driving to Galveston
Most of our guests arrive by car. The drive to Galveston is part of the adventure. Watching the landscape change from city skyline to coastal wetlands is beautiful.
Taking Interstate 45 (I-45)
The most direct route is taking I-45 South from Houston. It is a straight shot that leads you directly to the Galveston Causeway. Crossing the causeway is our favorite moment. You go over the water, and suddenly, you see the island stretched out before you. It signals that your vacation has officially started.
On your way down, you might pass near the Kemah Boardwalk. It is a great place to stop for a quick bite or to stretch your legs before finishing the drive.
The Bolivar Ferry Route
For a more scenic and unique route, you can drive through the Bolivar Peninsula. You would take Highway 87 to the tip of the peninsula. From there, you drive your car onto the free Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry.
The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes. It gives you a break from driving and a chance to smell the salty air. You might even see dolphins jumping in the ship channel! This route is perfect if you are staying in one of our Crystal Beach vacation rentals before heading over to Galveston.
💡 Fun fact: The ferry operates 24 hours a day and is completely free for all vehicles and pedestrians.
Shuttles and Ride Services
If you do not want to drive, you have other options. This is popular for guests who are meeting family here or taking a cruise.
- Galveston Express: This is a shuttle service that runs between the Houston airports and Galveston. It is affordable and reliable.
- Rideshare: Apps like Uber and Lyft operate from both Houston airports. They can drop you off right at the door of your BeachBox rental.
- Private Car Service: For a luxury experience, you can hire a private limo or town car to bring you to the island in style.
Getting Around the Island
Once you arrive, getting around is easy. The island is only about 32 miles long and a few miles wide.
Rent a Golf Cart
This is the most fun way to explore! In many neighborhoods, especially on the West End or near Jamaica Beach, golf carts are the preferred way to travel. You can rent them daily or weekly. It makes carrying your beach gear to the sand very easy.
The Galveston Trolley
If you are staying near the Seawall or Downtown, look for the trolley. It is a vintage-style rail and bus system. It connects major spots like Stewart Beach, the Seawall, and the Historic Strand District. It is very affordable and kids love riding it.
